Back in 2017 I was invited to the Haus der kulturen der welt in Berlin to speak at the Apparatus of Racism conference (before we boycotted Germany). I was on a panel with the Ha’aretz journalist, Amira Hass and tried to push back against her separation of race from colonialism. I don’t formulate everything in the exact same way today, as some of my thinking has evolved, but this might be an interesting insight into our different approaches to the question of what race does.
It’s worth thinking about the fact that Hass says things in this talk that she probably would be decried as an antisemite for saying in Germany today! But in light of an article published today in which she claims that the Israeli military fails to ‘grasp the risk of mass death by starvation in Gaza’ these divergences between our approaches may be interesting.
